I get asked a lot of questions but believe it or not, my most commonly asked Q has absolutely nothing to do with cheese.. I've noticed that people are far more interested in the process of how I got to where I am today, AKA, how the F did I start a business?
This biz happened quite organically for me and I'm going to share exactly how I got to where I am today, in probably the least informative way, because I ain't no professional in business talk.
I mean, the best place to start might be, who is this cheese obsessed chick (me) anyway?
My name is Katelyn, I'm 22 years old (22 is also my lucky number). I major in all things cheese yes, but the #hospolife is quite new to me. I'm an Interior Designer who never ever thought that I'd one day, own a platter business - still MIND BOGGLING to me. I have an Italian and Maltese background so I'm a born and raised foodie, specialising in cheese of course. Most importantly, I have a doggo named Bonnie and a birb named Miso.
Okay okay okay, onto the juicy stuff...
Where did Platter Up Co come from? My answer is as simple as, I just REALLY like cheese!
I started the Instagram account for Platter Up Co on the 11th of August 2018. Just over 5 months ago. It started as a little hobby, I would make cheese platters all the time, at any given chance, so why not make an Insta page dedicated to them? A portfolio of my favourite thing, cheese.
So building a business big enough for me to be able to quit my job just 2 months into starting, is pretty crazy stuff. First of all, my biggest tip for ANYONE starting a business is to post as much content as you possibly can! I would make platters for every occasion, family get togethers, girls nights in, and sometimes, for no reason at all. I would make them, take a few pics, and post them!
I'm going to make the story of what happened next super dramatic, just cause'.
I was sitting at work and I was having a god awful day, nothing in particular was going wrong, just nothing was going right. It was a 'one of those days' days. I put the paint brush down and opened up Instagram, lo and behold, there it was.. my scapegoat. Sarahs Day had uploaded a photo, she was planning her gender reveal party and was looking for someone to MAKE A PLATTER FOR IT! Holy moly, I have never been quicker to send anyone a DM in my life! Don't get me wrong, I LOVED my job, but just like any job, it gets tough sometimes! Sez wrote back, and it was all systems go.
I made my website, registered my business, got certified, and platter'd my little heart out. Sarah was lovely enough to post some pics on her social media and tag me, and I grew a following on my account super duper fast. Faster then you can say 'cheese please'. Tip: Collabs are so handy when wanting to get exposure!
From there, orders starting coming in and it didn't take long before I was run off my feet. The life of Platter Up Co has been so fast paced and nothing short of exciting, I can't wait to see where we go from here. There's one thing I know for sure, it's going to be big.
